The first-ever marriage on the Metaverse just happened. Is it legally binding?

Decentraland hosted the first-ever marriage in the Metaverse. The couple Ryan and Candice Hurley, were nostalgic about their first marriage of 14 years ago and decided to marry a second time…on the Metaverse with 2.000 virtual guests. You might have already guessed that their marriage certificate was issued through an NFT (of course!). Pictures of the wedding are reported by the Twitter use @KanardAzul and can be found here.

An Associate Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court assisted the ceremony in making things formal. 

You can legally get married online, so what about in the Metaverse?

Nowadays, people can get married online in an instant. However, you can’t get married on the MetaVerse, according to the American Marriage Ministries (AMM). That is because on the Metaverse – unlike online – the partner’s real faces are not fully recognizable. Therefore, AMM requires that faces don’t get distorted to get married using streaming software.

According to professional marriage officiants, MetaVerse marriage is more of a show than legally binding or affects our “real” life.

The metaverse expansion

Ryan and Candice Hurley’s story is another example of how the Metaverse expands into our lives, even touching our most private and personal spheres. Metaverse is a pre-existing adult virtual world online where people can meet and interact. Two developers created it in 2005, although it started to be noticed only recently, touching its peak popularity in 2021. In 2022 this is also a place for people to meet dating partners, make new friends, or even explore their sexuality. You can find other avatars that want to do anything from chat to xxx if you’re into that kind of thing. As the internet becomes more popular, it seems as though it will be hard for virtual worlds like this one ever to die out. That’s why we need to remember how these types of digital spaces have affected society in recent years. It’s also important that we take a look at their downsides so we can remember the consequences of becoming too dependent on technology.
