Virgin Galactic is the subject of unusually high option trading (NYSE:SPCE)

The options market for Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) exhibited some strange behavior on Monday. In total, 37,997 call options were purchased on the stock by buyers participating in the trading market. This represents an increased call volume of nearly 111% when contrasted with the daily average volume of 18,030 call choices previously observed.

On November 3, Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) gave investors a report on the company’s financial performance for the third quarter. The report focused on the company’s performance in the space tourism industry. The company announced earnings of $0.55 per share for the quarter, which was $0.15 less than the consensus estimate of industry analysts, who had predicted earnings of $0.40 per share for the period. Return on equity for the company was negative at a rate of -59.12%, and the profit margin was negative at a rate of -27,154.61%. Both of these metrics were in the red for Virgin Galactic. The report states that the company had a total revenue of $0.77 million during the period covered by it. It is anticipated that Virgin Galactic will incur a loss of 1.88 cents per share due to the operations that took place this year.

Several institutional investors and hedge funds have recently been very active in the stock market, engaging in various transactions, including buying and selling companies. During the third quarter, Vanguard Group Inc. increased the amount of Virgin Galactic stock owned by 3.1%, bringing the total percentage of stock owned by the company to 100%. The Vanguard Group Inc. bought an additional 558,020 shares during the quarter, bringing the total number of shares it owns to 18,656,987, with a value of $87,874,000. BlackRock Inc. increased the amount of Virgin Galactic stock owned by 6.9% during the third quarter of 2018. Following the acquisition of 1,142,966 additional shares during the most recent fiscal quarter, BlackRock Inc. now owns 17,747,749 shares of the company’s stock, which have a value of $83,591,000. This brings the total number of shares directly held by the company to 17,747,749. During the third quarter, the State Street Corporation achieved an 11.2% increase in the proportion of Virgin Galactic stock it owned. After purchasing 1,340,554 additional shares during the most recent fiscal quarter, State Street Corp. now owns 13,271,346 shares. The current value of these shares puts the company’s worth at $62,508,000. During the second quarter of the fiscal year, the Northern Trust Corporation increased the percentage of Virgin Galactic, in which it has a stake, by 149.3%. After making additional purchases totaling 1,199,760 shares during the most recent quarter, Northern Trust Corp. now owns a total of 2,003,233 shares in the company, which have a value of $12,060,000.

Last but not least, during the second quarter, Credit Suisse AG accomplished an increase of 19.1 percent in the proportion of Virgin Galactic stock it owned. Credit Suisse AG now directly owns a total of 1,856,483 shares, valued at $11,176,000. This is a result of the recent purchase of 297,198 additional shares in the company during the most recent fiscal quarter. A total of 32.12% of the shares are held in treasury by various hedge funds and other institutional investors.
